SEND reports $3,000 missing

ELYRIA — As much as $3,000 in cash is missing from the nonprofit group aimed at improving life on the city’s south side.

Lynn Torres, a representative of the South Elyria Neighborhood Development Corp., filed a police report March 10 alleging that the money was missing. According to a press release received Friday by The Chronicle-Telegram, the group said it “discovered many instances of suspected employee theft” and that it intends to pursue “the prosecution of the responsible party and to recoup the stolen funds, if possible.”

The letter referred all questions to SEND’s attorney, Steven Beranek, who did not return calls Friday.

Torres, too, referred all questions to Beranek when contacted Friday.

Elyria police Lt. Andy Eichenlaub wouldn’t provide specifics on the case. He wouldn’t say how the money disappeared, or whether there is more than one suspect. He said he doesn’t want to release too much on the case because he doesn’t want to provide clues to the culprit or culprits on how to cover their tracks.

SEND Executive Director Chris Baker also did not return messages, and calls to her personal phone were met with a message that the number was disconnected.

In the letter from SEND, it said the agency will take steps to make certain that such a situation doesn’t recur, and that the agency will continue its efforts to improve the city.

SEND is a nonprofit group located at 606 Middle Ave. It provides home ownership, foreclosure and credit counseling, and it has been successful in the past in helping police shut down drug houses.
