Browns sign linebacker Orr to 1-year deal

The Browns agreed to a
one-year contract with linebacker Shantee Orr on Friday, filling the vacancy created when Chaun Thompson signed with the Houston Texans.
Orr (6-foot-1, 246 pounds) can play inside and outside and on special teams. Orr, 26, has made 25 starts in 51 games in five seasons. He started last season with Houston and finished it with Jacksonville.
“Shantee has experience as an inside and outside linebacker and has also played extensively on special teams,” general manager Phil Savage said in a statement. “This signing will add to our depth and create better competition at these positions.”
Thompson spent the last three years going back and forth between inside and outside linebacker and had become a mainstay on special teams. Orr has 89 career tackles, 10½ sacks and 25 special teams tackles.
Orr entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie out of Michigan in 2003. His best year was 2005 in Houston, when he started 12 games and had a career-high 47 tackles and seven sacks.
The Browns are still searching for a linebacker who can challenge for a starting spot. Veterans Al Wilson and Clark Haggans visited Browns headquarters, but both left without a contract.
Free-agent cornerback Benny Sapp (5-9, 190) was also in town this week. The four-year veteran would add depth if he is signed.
