The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present. Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Robert J. Martin, 99, of Elyria, passed away Friday evening, March 28, 2008 at New Life Hospice Center of St Joseph in Lorain, following a lengthy illness. He was born June 16, 1908 in Ravenna, and moved with his family as a youth to Wooster, where he lived until moving to Lorain County in 1940. He resided in Avon from 1948 -1987 and then moved to Elyria.
As a boy and student, Robert worked at O.A.R.D.C. Agricultural College in Wooster in various departments as assistant and later when he was older, he worked for the United Engineering & Foundry in Wooster, for 15 years. In 1939, he started working as a Machinist for National Tube Co.( later US Steel Co) in Lorain, until he retired in 1971.
Robert has been a member of the Lutheran Church his entire life and currently was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lorain, where he served as usher and delivered meals on wheels for several years. He belonged to all seven branches of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge and has held state and national offices in the Order. He was an 80 year member of I.O.O.F.
He belonged to Palace Theater Civic Club and took tickets for ten + years. He also belonged to C.I.O. No. 1104 union at the Steel plant and was active in the Retirees Club having served as President in past years. He was a member of the Elyria Senior Men’s Fellowship. Robert enjoyed model trains, taking bus trips and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Roxie L. Martin (nee Rose); daughter Patricia Adams of Elyria; three granddaughters, Judith Hall of NC, Jill Mann of Elyria and Jayne Rogers of Missoula, Montana; three great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna O. Martin (nee Elliott) in 1986; daughters Wanda in 1933 and Marylyn in 1971; a sister Emma Leathers in 1999; and his parents Clark H. and Zaidee M. Martin (nee Hutchinson).
Funeral services will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 1 at 11 A.M. Rev Woody Chamberlain, Pastor of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lorain, will officiate. Burial will be at Smithville Cemetery in Smithville. Friends may call at the Busch Funeral Home, 114 Second Street, Elyria from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Monday, March 31, 2008 and 10 A.M. until service time Tuesday, April 1, 2008. www.buschfuneral.com
