Unsung heroes sought
Do you know a woman who has exhibited great compassion for others or her community? Do you wish there was a way to honor her, as well as let the whole world know who this unsung hero is?
The Community Foundation of Lorain County and Lorain County Community College have joined forces to create an event that aims to do just that. The first Women of Compassion event is Oct. 16, when five women will be honored for their work in the community.
“We’re really looking for the unsung heroes, the people working behind the scenes who are truly making a difference,” said Beth Maiden, of the Community Foundation. “Perhaps it’s a teacher who has given extra time to a student, or a nurse who has really demonstrated compassion — these women and their efforts deserve to be recognized and celebrated.”
Nominations are currently being accepted for the Women of Compassion Awards. Nominees must live or work in Lorain County. One special award for a Rising Star is designated for a young woman 25 or younger. Nominations will be reviewed by a committee of volunteers and LCCC and Community Foundation staff. Nominees will then be celebrated at a gala luncheon at the Spitzer Conference Center that will be open to the public and hosted by Brooke Taylor, morning show personality from 95.5 FM the FISH. Proceeds from the event will benefit LCCC’s Women’s Link program and the Community Foundation’s Women’s Fund.Nomination forms are available at www.PeopleWhoCare.org or by calling (440) 323-4445 or (440) 277-0142. Nominations are due by June 2.

Texas Roadhouse is getting involved in the fight against breast cancer by hosting a fundraising night to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. From 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at its Market Drive location, Texas Roadhouse will donate 10 percent of each customer’s total bill to the Komen Foundation when the guest mentions the Komen Foundation.
By having dinner at the Elyria restaurant, patrons will also help local cancer patients. The Komen Foundation’s Northeast Ohio affiliate has dedicated contributions this year to 21 local organizations in the form of more than $1 million in grants for projects that support the battle against breast cancer. Receiving grants from the foundation this year are Community Health Partners Regional Foundation, ANGELS & AMIGAS Uniting for a Common Cause and YWCA of Elyria, Project Reach. Bus tour fights cancerAs part of a six-month, 48-state tour, the Fight Back Express bus will stop in Elyria May 4, carrying the message, “If one person can battle cancer, a nation can rise up and defeat it.” The tour, sponsored by the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, highlights the role elected officials play in making cancer a national priority.
Cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and their families will hold a rally 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Community Cancer Center, 41201 Schaden Road. There will be a mobile action center where visitors can electronically share their stories with their elected officials as well as sign a petition to guarantee all Americans access to quality health care.
The tour, which kicks off in early May, will travel across the U.S. through Election Day. For information, log onto www.acscan.org/bus.
