Police seek cause of I-90 crash

GARFIELD HEIGHTS — Police are searching for answers about why a former Sheffield Lake man drove the wrong way on Interstate 480 early Sunday, causing an accident that killed him and a Mentor man.

Adam Brownfield, 27, died after driving westbound in the eastbound lanes at about 80 mph at 12:16 a.m. Sunday, according to a police report.

Brownfield, who was living in Cleveland, had been at Saturday night’s Cleveland Indians game with a female friend, said Capt. Robert Sackett.

The woman was not in Brownfield’s SUV at the time of the crash, and police planned to talk to her today, Sackett said.

A number of witnesses reported that Brownfield’s Nissan SUV was going the wrong way for a couple of miles. The first call reporting a wrong-way driver was made to Warrensville Heights police, Sackett said.

He said he does not know where Brownfield entered the highway.

There are two basic ways to drive the wrong way — getting onto the highway on an exit ramp, or turning around and going the wrong way in a median cross-over used by safety forces, Sackett said.

He said the coroner’s office is doing tests to determine if alcohol or drugs played a part in the crash.

Also killed was Frank Huber, 61, who was driving his vintage 1960 MG, Sackett said.

Brownfield was wearing lap and harness safety belts, Sackett said. He said Huber was not wearing a seat belt. Sackett said he did not know if 1960 MG even has a seat belt because it is a vintage car.

After the initial crash, Huber’s car was struck by a Chevrolet Impala.

The driver of that third car, Ann Fox, 29, was treated for minor injuries, Sackett said.
