H.S. Baseball: Andrew Kubuski pitches EC past Brookside

LORAIN — You could say Andrew Kubuski has Brookside’s number this season.
And it doesn’t look like he’s going to lose it.
Kubuski, a sophomore lefty, held Brookside to two hits Tuesday afternoon at the Pipe Yard in Elyria Catholic’s easy 9-0 victory. It was Kubuski’s second win over the Cardinals this year; the first was 4-1 on a four-hitter.
For the Panthers (11-5), it was their third triumph over Brookside. Kubuski’s gem was the seventh complete game for Elyria Catholic pitchers in 16 games.
“Our pitchers are really doing the job,” EC coach Tom Kubuski said. “Andrew pitched really well today.”
Elyria Catholic pounded out 11 hits, three of them by Kyle Koberna, and was helped by four Cardinal errors.
The Panthers scored one in the first on singles by Koberna and Edwin Cruz sandwiched around an error.
They added another in the second on two Brookside errors, and pushed the lead to 6-0 with three in the fourth on singles by Mike Norton, Kubuski and Koberna.
Koberna’s triple to left sparked a three-run fifth to finish the scoring.
Kubuski’s pitching gem was highlighted by 12 strikeouts. He walked three.
“This was probably my best game of the year,” he said. “I wanted to come out to the Pipe Yard and have fun.
“We’re really playing better as a team. We started the season slowly. I mixed my pitches up a lot today. My curve was really working keeping them off balance.”
Tom Kubuski said the Panthers seized their opportunities.
“If they are going to have trouble fielding the ball, we’ve got to take advantage,” he said. “And we did. We were putting the bat on the ball.”
