The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present.  Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Earl Cooksey

Earl Cooksey, 85, of Elyria, passed away Saturday afternoon May 17, 2008, at Elyria Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness. He was born Oct 4, 1922 in Dennis, Kentucky where he was raised and lived until coming to Elyria as a young man. Earl has made his home in Elyria for the last 69 years.

Earl served in the United States Army during WWII and was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal as well as the WWII Victory Medal.  He worked as assistant with the Engineering Department at York International for 44 years retiring in 1985. He was an active member of Church of the Open Door in Elyria and its Messager/Maranatha class. Earl served as a deacon, usher as well volunteering for many service projects at the church and in the community. He was a member of the Jolly Sixties at Elyria Baptist Church, the Retired Senior Fellowship of Elyria and the Elyria American Legion Post #12.  In Earl’s free time he enjoyed playing golf.

Survivors include his wife, of 61 years Claris Elizabeth Cooksey (nee: Lamb); sons, Steven Cooksey and his wife, Jill of Amherst, Terry Cooksey and wife Cheryl of North Ridgeville and Brian Cooksey of Amherst; six grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; brothers, Roland Cooksey and Estil Cooksey both of Bellevue and Elwood "Woody" Cooksey of Elyria; sisters, Louella Perkins of Webville, Kentucky, Elouise Griffith of Louisa, Kentucky and Shelby Hall of Elyria.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, and his daughter-in-law, Tracey Cooksey in 2007; grandson, Michael Cooksey in 2007;  brothers, Benton Cooksey in 2007, Lande Cooksey in 1944 and Dalton Cooksey in 2003; and by his parents, Willard and Emma Cooksey (nee: Hutchenson).Friends may call, Tuesday, May 20, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at 11 A.M. at the Church of the Open Door, 43275 Telegraph Road, Elyria, OH. The Rev. Jeff Ahlgrim, will officiate. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.
