Amherst native gets attention on ‘Bachelorette’
Never judge a book by its cover, even when it walks through the door in a screamingly loud coat of many colors.
DeAnna Pappas’ first wide-eyed reaction to Jesse Csincsak’s pink, green, blue, purple and black sport coat on Monday night’s two-hour season opener of ABC’s “The Bachelorette” could have led some to think the ex-Amherst man and pro snowboarder was going to be 86-ed before the night was done.
But long before 10 of the 25 guys vying for the Greek beauty’s heart were sent packing, Csincsak was assured of living to fight another day for the woman who was herself rejected in the finale of last fall’s “The Bachelor.”
About an hour into the show, Csincsak was among the first three men to be given “first impression” roses by Pappas, who said she was able to get past his loud jacket and strands of hair in his face to realize he possessed a “great personality.”
Pappas’ decision may have been influenced by Jenni, a close friend who surveyed the contestants before giving Pappas’ her own impressions. “Jesse is awesome,” she told Pappas. “He has a good sense of humor.”
Though shorter than many of his macho-to-the-max competitors, and clearly less GQ-looking, Csincsak, 25, was no less inventive and willing to take a chance to get noticed by the dark-haired Pappas. “First impressions are everything,” she said early in the program.
And Csincsak obviously made a positive one in spite of his rainbow-splattered jacket and fluorescent sneakers — or perhaps because of them. “I’m not the guy in the square. I’m the guy in the triangle.”
After arriving at the series’ palatial mansion setting in a series of black stretch limos, the guys had to work and think fast to come up with ways to get Pappas’ attention to avoid being among the 10 contestants eliminated at the end of the first installment.
Other contestants in the initial pool of 25 ranged from a chef, barbershop owner and single dad to an oyster farmer, science teacher and financial analyst.
At one point, Csincsak flipped over a sofa to land between Pappas and another contestant. “I decided not to read about you online,” he told her. “I wanted to feel it.”
As the show concluded, the remaining 15 contestants were all clustered around Pappas, including Csincsak, who was standing by her right shoulder.
Relax, Jesse. You got the woman’s attention.
The reality show airs each week at 8 p.m. Monday.
