Division I district track and field: Midview’s Ebersole not at his best, but still wins discus
AMHERST — It might have looked like cause for concern, but Midview senior Drew Ebersole didn’t sweat it.
Ebersole won the Amherst Division I district discus title Wednesday with a throw of 169 feet, 4 inches to advance to next week’s regional meet at Amherst. He managed to win the crown despite being a little off his game.
The No. 1-seeded Ebersole (186-9) trailed Brunswick senior Zack Marinucci (167-9) by nine feet heading into the finals.
Ebersole’s first throw in the prelims carried 157 feet, which put him in second place behind Marinucci heading into the finals. After fouling his first throw in the finals, Ebersole notched his winning throw.
“I check out the state rankings, but I don’t put too much thought into it,” said Ebersole. “As long as I’m where I need to be I’m happy with it. I’m still motivated. I’m not done yet. My thoughts are on June 7.”
That would be the state meet. Ebersole’s longest throw Wednesday was probably his last (178 feet), but it was foul by three feet.
“I feel I’m where I need to be right now and that I’m set,” Ebersole said. “I’m just looking forward to shot put on Friday. I’m still lifting this week. Saturday will be my last day of lifting before the state meet.”
Ebersole threw the discus 186-9 and the shot put 60-0 for school records on May 9 at the Bulldog Relays.
Westlake freshman Kalpana Beach also had a slightly off day Wednesday. The No. 2-seeded high jumper (5-8) finished second (5-4) to Medina freshman Taylor Burke (5-6). Burke was the No. 1 seed (5-9).
“This was only my second time competing with a knee brace,” Beach said. “I have some inflammation. It’s just inflamed because of overuse. I skipped a couple meets over the last month to give it a break so it would heal. I didn’t get over 5-8 in practice this week, so that kind of played around in my head.”
The Westlake girls rallied from an early 50-yard deficit to finish second in the
3,200-meter relay. Senior Lauren Ledek, sophomore Julia Fulton, freshman Alesha Beverly and freshman Megan Dunlap clocked a season-best 9:53.94.
“I think we did a good run today,” Beverly said. “We’re all very excited about advancing.”
Berea senior Phil Gore set a meet record in winning the pole vault (15-2). North Olmsted sophomore Josh Price won the long jump (21-9), while senior Christine Kanis, also of North Olmsted, won the shot put (36-7) by 15 inches.
District action continues Friday with field events at 4 p.m. and running finals at 6 p.m.
