Division II regional track: Avon’s Bushong blows away competition, captures discus title
Avon senior Alex Bushong won the discus title at the Ravenna Division II regional track meet in convincing fashion.
Bushong crushed the nearest competition by more than 17 feet as he tossed the discus 167 feet, 6 inches. It was a personal record by 5 feet.
Bay junior Dayna Rohlke earned her second straight ticket to the state meet. Rohlke high-jumped 5-4 as she finished third behind Struthers senior Ashley Galbraith (5-6) and Tallmadge junior Amanda Bennett (5-5).
Bushong and Rohlke were the only two local state qualifiers from Thursday’s action. The top four finishers per events qualified to next weekend’s state meet. Action for the regional meet continues on Saturday.
Avon junior Christina Herbst led three local throwers in the girls shot put as she finished eighth (37-8). Vermilion junior Anne Hamilton (37-7¾) and Clearview senior Brianna Hancock (36-7 ½) placed ninth and 10th, respectively.
The Vermilion boys 3,200-meter relay had its fastest time of the season by two seconds as it finished seventh. Senior Nate Cremean, freshman Addam Kitchen, junior Todd Hathaway and junior Nate Rodriguez finished with a time of 8:17.11. Rodriguez also finished seventh in pole vault.
On the girls side, both Bay (sixth, 9:53.17) and Avon (10th, 10:02.63) finished in the top 10. Hannah Farver, Kelsey Poisson, Molly Gorie and Stephanie Black ran for Bay. Nicole Armstrong, Mallory Balmert, Kayla Welch and Erin Schneider ran for Avon.
At the Lexington Division II regional, Keystone sophomore Anthony Chizmadia was 12th in the discus (125-7) and Black River senior Greg Hartman was 14th in the long jump (18-11½).
