Yearbook advisers recognized
Two advisers for the 2007 Shore Log yearbook at Avon Lake High School have produced one of the best yearbooks in the state of Ohio. Krystine Shea and Hilary Bickerton received the honor from Josten’s, a company specializing in making yearbooks and class rings. Only 10 schools in Ohio were among those named by Josten’s.
Avon Police getting new K9 gear
Criminals won’t stand a chance against Lennox the dog. The new four-legged Avon police officer will get a bullet-proof vest Tuesday after the Avon Heritage School Boosters hand over a check to his human crime-fighting partners for $1,032. Police will receive the check at noon prior to Field Day events at the school.
Heritage South staff and students raised the funds in honor of fallen Cleveland Heights police officer Jason West, who was an Avon High School graduate and whose mother, Georgine West, is the district’s transportation supervisor.
National Merit Scholar
Jeffrey C. Russ, 18, of Avon Lake, was named a National Merit Scholarship finalist, which guarantees him $500 to $2,000 in scholarship money each year of college.
The Avon Lake High School graduate plans to attend the University of Iowa in the fall and pursue a career in literature/writing.Russ attended three different high schools throughout his career, attending St. Ignatius and Avon Lake high schools, as well as a school in Philadelphia. While at St. Ignatius, he was a member of the crew team and sat on the Junior Council on World Affairs.
A lover of the written word, Russ wrote for Avon Lake’s school newspaper, the Spectrum. He also wrote for the Avon Lake Press newspaper last summer. Russ, a guitar player, and his band, Our Veins Are Maps, won last year’s battle of the bands contest at Avon Lake High. He has also been a member of book clubs at two different schools and participated in intramural handball.
Russ works at Klingshirn Winery in Avon Lake as a handyman, but his enthusiasm for the job compelled him to complete his senior project on wine making.
Russ, who graduates with a 4.35 GPA, earned an 800 on the writing portion of the SAT.
