Strickland switches support to Obama

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland is joining other Democrats in supporting Barack Obama for president now that Obama is the party’s presumptive nominee.

Strickland had been a strong supporter of Hillary Rodham Clinton. He said in a statement Thursday that he spoke with Clinton and thanked her for the effort she put into her campaign.

He said he’ll work with Clinton to unify the party and make sure Obama wins in November.

A spokesman for Strickland said the governor was unavailable for further comment.

Strickland has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate. He’s said previously that he’s not interested in the job.

Ohio gave President Bush the electoral votes he needed for re-election in 2004, and the state figures to play a pivotal role again. Ohio has been hit hard by the loss of manufacturing jobs.
