Elyria wins 11-2; plays Saturday for state title

UPDATE:

The Elyria Pioneers softball team advanced to the third straight state title championship game after it defeated Mason 11-2 at Firestone Stadium in Akron on Friday afternoon.  Now, the girls will face their nemesis, North Canton Hoover, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in a rematch of the 2006 title game, which Hoover won.

Elyria pitcher Tess Sito struck out 12 in Friday’s win.

The Pioneers’ title game will come after another Lorain County team, Wellington, tries to secure a state title in its game against Hebron Lakewood at 12:30 p.m. in Akron.

UPDATE:

Elyria’s bats have stayed alive — in the bottom of the sixth inning, the score is now 11-2. Pinch hitter Amy Bally scored Jen Houser to add to the sizable lead over Mason.

 

UPDATE:

In the bottom of the fifth, Elyria added yet another run on a Cynthia Woodard single — making it a 10-2 ballgame. 

 

UPDATE:

Elyria answered Mason’s effort in the bottom of the fourth — scoring two more, including one that was singled in by Jessica Bellottie, who is turning out to be the Pioneers offensive weapon in this game.

 

 

UPDATE:

Mason is staying in the game — scoring 2 runs in the top of the fourth inning after an Elyria error. The score is now 7-2.

 

UPDATE:

In the bottom of the third, Elyria batted around and scored five runs — making it a 7-0 ballgame.

 

EARLIER STORY:

It didn’t take long for the Elyria softball team to make a statement in today’s semifinal game in Akron’s Firestone Stadium.

It was the bottom of the first when an infield single by Jessica Bellottie scored 2 runs to take a 2-0 lead over Mason.
