CLEVELAND — The Indians bucked the first-round trend Friday, taking pitchers with 28 of their 44 selections in rounds seven through 50 during the second day of the amateur draft.
The opening round of the draft Thursday saw 15 position players go within the first 20 selections, the Indians following suit by taking third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall out of Pitt (N.C.) Community College with the 29th overall pick.
Cleveland chose a position player with their first pick of Day 2 — sophomore right fielder Timothy Fedroff out of UNC Chapel Hill — but then pitchers with four of their next five selections, continuing the trend for the majority of the day.
The Indians showed a preference for the University of Michigan through their first 20 picks, choosing three Wolverines over the span — junior right-hander Steven Putnam (fifth round), junior third baseman Adam Abraham and senior first baseman Nathan Recknagel.
