CLEVELAND  — A driver who left a school bus unattended just before it crashed with students aboard has been charged with child endangering and other crimes.

Police say 57-year-old Michael Weir, of Cleveland, left the bus, went into a service station, bought diesel and used the bathroom in April. When he came out, he saw the bus rolling down a hill and into a bridge near Cleveland’s Flats district.

Police say Weir’s bus didn’t have correct markings, wasn’t registered properly and wasn’t inspected. Police also say Weir didn’t have the right commercial driver’s license.

Police also have charged the Arts Academy in Cleveland and Aqua Limo Ground Transportation with two counts each of child endangering.

None of the children had life-threatening injuries.

Weir could not be reached for comment late Tuesday. Police say he does not have an attorney listed.
