A 69,000-kilovolt power line running along Oberlin-Elyria Road — across from Ritsko Insulation — suffered a power surge as a result of the increased demand for power to run air conditionings, and the surge knocked it down from the pole, where it hit a 12,000-kilovolt line.
The result? A blackout on the the city’s southside that stretched into Carlisle Township.
Ohio Edison officials say they have the problem repaired enough that at about 3:30 p.m., power should be restored to all but a line of customers along Middle Avenue.
The power outage was pretty wide spread — at one point, the county jail on Murray Ridge Road was operating on a backup generator.
