Bowling: Loschetter is C-T’s woman of the year
AVON – There was nothing out of the ordinary Thursday at the Elyria Women`s Bowling Association`s awards banquet at Tom`s Country Place.
Avon resident Erin Loschetter picked up her first Russ Davies Memorial Award as The Chronicle-Telegram`s Bowler of the Year for the 2007-08 season.
“I won a couple of these (Bowler of the Year awards) as a youth,” said Loschetter. “I`m really excited to be receiving my first Bowler of the Year award as an adult.”
What happened Thursday paled in comparison to the events in Loschetter`s life Sept. 20 and the week that followed.
Rolling in the Invacare Classic league at Brunswick Zone, Loschetter achieved a longtime dream when she rolled her first 300 game as an adult. It was the only perfect game rolled by an EWBA member during the season.
Loschetter`s husband, Chris, called from Japan a few hours after she arrived home. Chris, a professional bowler, was competing in a tournament and called to tell her that he had bowled a perfect game.
Erin`s perfect game came about an hour after Chris got his second 300 while competing in a Japan Cup tournament. At first, Chris couldn`t believe Erin`s good news but knew she had the talent to accomplish the feat. Erin finished her Sept. 20 series with 204 and 248 games, giving her a 752 series and earning her Bowler of the Week honors.
About a week after her momentous night at Brunswick Zone, Erin sprained an ankle. The injury kept her off the lanes for about six weeks.
But it didn`t stop her from bringing home the hardware Thursday night.
“Actually, I have no real secrets,” said Loschetter, a benefits analyst in the human resources department at Steris Corp., a manufacturer of sterilization equipment for hospitals. “Picking up my spares and keeping open frames to a minimum certainly are plusses. Having good teammates, men and women, is another thing that helps me do as well as I do.
“Chris tries to help me when he can. We practice together and roll some competitive games, mostly those that help me with my skills.”
Loschetter, who grew up in Oberlin, thanked a couple of other people.
“My mother, Marti Landford, took me bowling a lot as a youth,” she said. “That`s how I got better. And Tom Reid at Oberlin Lanes let me practice all I wanted to get better. These are two of the best people that I knew when growing up.
“Tom was always willing to set up shots to hone my skills. He deserves a lot of credit for where I am with my bowling today.”
Other awards were handed out Thursday, including for the group`s City Tournament, other tournaments and most improved. Loschetter also received the Margaret Henke award for having the Association`s top average (217).
As usual, the banquet`s festivities concluded with the induction of three members into the Association`s Hall of Fame.
Angie Rorick, a 41-year EWBA member who rolled a 276 high game and a 632 high series while maintaining an average in the 170-180 range, was inducted under the Star of Yesteryear category. Rorick recently underwent major oral surgery and was unable to attend.
“I deeply regret that I can`t attend a very important night of my life,” said Rorick in a statement read by longtime friend and fellow bowler Reta Carr. “This truly is one of the greatest honors of my life.”
Marlene Tuttle was inducted under the Meritorious category as she was recognized for being highly involved with the sport. Tuttle began bowling in 1975 at Center Ridge Lanes and became a league officer the next year. She`s promoted the EWBA in many ways and has received many special awards.
“I want to thank everybody,” said Tuttle. “It`s been a real pleasure to bowl with you. I can`t really think of too much else to say but thank you.”
Lastly, Sanchen Gibbs was inducted under the Superior category, recognizing her prowess on the lanes. Like Rorick, she was unable to attend following a knee replacement.
Gibbs has been an EWBA member for 20 years and has maintained an average in the 172-189 range. In 1989, she rolled a 300 game and her career-high 793 series. All the while, Gibbs has been a league officer and served on the Association`s Board of Directors. She has been a member of many championship teams in leagues and tournaments and coached youth leagues.
“I want to thank everybody for this honor, especially those who nominated her for it,” said Ruth Edwards, Gibbs` mother. “I proudly accept this for her.”
