Motorsports roundup: NHRA carries on following Kalitta death; Elyria’s Connolly second in Pro Stock
A day after a fatal crash involving Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta on the same track, Elyria native Dave Connolly and other drivers concluded the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., on Sunday.
Connolly finished second in Pro Stock, losing in the final to Greg Anderson. The second-place finish boosted Connolly to 11th place in the POWERade Pro Stock season standings. Warren Johnson is the Pro Stock leader.
“We won some close races and luck was with us,” Connolly said. “Any day we can get to the finals is a good day for us. We picked up a lot of points. The points battle is pretty tough right now, but hopefully we’ll get it all straightened out.”
Connolly will be at Norwalk Raceway Park this weekend for the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals.
In other divisions, five-time world champion Tony Schumacher raced to his first Top Fuel win in 12 tries. Tim Wilkerson won in Funny Car.
There was no official word about the cause of the fiery Saturday crash that killed Kalitta, but Bloomberg News reported that a parachute on Kalitta’s car failed to deploy and the car hit a pole.
Wheldon rolls in Iowa
Dan Wheldon celebrated his 30th birthday by winning the Iowa Corn Indy 250 in Newton, Iowa, his second victory of the season.
Wheldon took the lead out of a caution flag with 60 laps to go after making the risky decision not to pit. The move paid off, as Wheldon held off Andretti Green drivers Hideki Mutoh and Marco Andretti down the stretch.
Wheldon’s win gave Chip Ganassi five victories in nine IRL races this season. Wheldon plans to donate his winnings to the victims of Iowa’s recent floods and tornados.

Felipe Massa of Ferrari won the French Grand Prix in Magny Cours, France, and moved atop the overall standings after his third F1 victory of the season.
Massa overtook teammate and pole sitter Kimi Raikkonen with
32 laps to go and held on to win by 17.9 seconds. It was the second consecutive Ferrari sweep at the Circuit de Nevers.
Massa leads the title race with
48 points — two points ahead of Robert Kubica of BMW Sauber, who finished fifth. Raikkonen trails Massa by five points in third. Toyota’s Jarno Trulli finished third ahead of McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen.
