Parts of Cleveland Clinic evacuated due to gas leak

CLEVELAND (AP) — A natural gas leak Tuesday on the campus of the Cleveland Clinic resulted in brief evacuation of about 200 people from a hotel conference center and its cardiovascular hospital, a clinic official said.

Employees and guests at the Intercontinental Hotel and some patients were evacuated or moved after the leak was noticed about 7 a.m, said Bill Peacock, director of operational support services.

No one was hurt, and the leak affected just a small part of the campus. The leak was stopped by about 8:40 a.m. and the buildings reopened shortly later, he said.

The leak was caused by a contractor who struck a gas line. Although the leak was outdoors, some odor was detected in the nearby buildings, Peacock said.
