Ohio State tops list for most music piracy warnings

COLUMBUS — Ohio State University heads a list of colleges that have received the most warnings about music piracy from the recording industry.

The Recording Industry Association of America sent 2,336 warning letters to Ohio State in the past school year. The University of Central Arkansas and Michigan State University ranked second and third, and no other Ohio school made the top 50.

The association compiled the list at the request of Congressman Howard Berman of California.

The industry is cracking down on illegal downloading by students, though violators could be anyone with access to a university’s computer system. The industry relies on schools to remove illegally traded songs and sometimes threatens to sue students who are repeat offenders.
