BREAKING NEWS — State rep. bows out of race

State Rep. Thomas Heydinger will not run for a full term in November.

Heydinger, D-Norwalk, was appointed in May to finish out the term of former state Rep. Matt Barrett, D-Amherst, who resigned after it was revealed pornographic images he accidentally displayed to a Norwalk High School class were his.

Barrett had originally blamed his teenage son for the images being on a state-issued computer memory stick and resigned after a police investigation revealed that wasn’t the case. Barrett was not charged.

Heydinger confirmed his decision not to seek a full term this morning, but said he plans to serve out the remainder of Barrett’s. A news release would be made available later today, he said.

Barrett, who was unopposed in the March Democratic primary, took his name off the November ballot in June and Democrats were expected to name Heydinger to replace him as the general election candidate.

Heydinger beat out several other applicants for Barrett’s post, including Assistant Lorain County Prosecutor Frank Janik.

Whomever the Democrats ultimately name as a candidate will face former Huron County Commissioner Terry Boose, a Republican, in November.
