Hot Stove: Spencer Legion Post 608 rolls in Class F district
Spencer American Legion Post 608 scored early and often, and also got a no-hitter from three pitchers, as manager Duane Morgan’s team trounced Midview Dairy Queen 22-0 in a Hot Stove Class F district quarterfinal Tuesday.
Spencer (18-0) advances to a district semifinal against the Vermilion Hurricanes on Saturday. A win could set up a showdown against Columbia J & J Greenhouse in what would be a battle of unbeatens in the district championship Sunday.
The winners turned six hits and a walk into a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning and added eight runs in the second en route to their five-inning win.
In the meantime, Spencer starting pitcher Justin Walter and relievers Austin Jones and Ty Knarr were two walks away from a perfect game. All but two of the outs were strikeouts. And those two outs — the last two of the game — came on popouts.
“This no-hitter and 13 strikeouts certainly were nice to see,” said Morgan. “I really have to be happy that our pitchers faced only 17 batters.
“This was a good, all-around team effort. It started right away in the first inning and continued right to the end.”
Justin Williams had three hits for Spencer, while Jones hit an inside-the-park home run. Walter and Austin Morgan hit triples, and John Guilford and Billy Anderson had two hits apiece.
Crum’s heroics carry Cavanaugh
Dustin Crum’s two-run double with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Midview Cavanaugh Electric to a thrilling 8-7 win over the Lorain Steelmen in a Class H game.
“You couldn’t have asked for a better game at this level than this one,” said Cavanaugh manager Mike Caithaml, whose team won its ninth straight to improve to 14-4. “Both teams played their hearts out. I’m very proud of both teams.
“Our pitching kept us in this game. We also manufactured our runs when we needed to and took advantage of the breaks when they came our way.”
Crum finished with six RBIs, and his fifth-inning grand slam tied the game at 5.
