Elyria East Big League team takes third at regional
Elyria East’s bid for a Big League regional championship ended Monday in Wyoming, Mich., with a 9-1 loss to the Illinois state champs.
Elyria East finished third in the region after taking second a year ago.
Illinois District 15 jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before East got back in the game with a run in the second. Illinois put the game away with four runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth.
“In the fifth and sixth inning it just appeared we didn’t have the same fire,” East coach Kevin Brubaker said.
Nolan Neuschafer had two hits for East, while Tory Stewart had a double and East’s lone RBI.
While East didn’t bring home a title, it did receive some honors. For the second year in a row, Stewart made the all-tournament team. He was also voted the No. 1 catcher in the region. Pitcher Brian Hart also made the all-tournament team.
East also took home a team award, winning the Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row.
