Ohio State Fair opens with butter presidents

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Gov. Ted Strickland has opened the 155th annual Ohio State Fair with a prediction that it will be a big draw for Ohioans stung by the high price of gasoline.

Strickland cut a red ribbon to get the festivities under way Wednesday morning and told reporters that he expects Ohio families will visit the 12-day fair instead of vacationing out of state.

This year, one of the fair’s most popular attractions features heads of state — eight of them, to be exact. With the traditional butter cow and calf sculptures stands “ Mount Buckeye,” a one-ton hill of butter featuring the likenesses of the eight U.S. presidents from Ohio.

The American Dairy Association says work on the Buckeye State version of Mount Rushmore took 370 hours.
