The Chronicle grabbed 13 prizes — including Best Daily Newspaper in Ohio — in the 2008 Ohio Society of Professional Journalists awards.

Four of the awards were in the prestigious Best of Show category, which recognizes a body of work as opposed to a single effort.

• Shawn Foucher was named Best Reporter in Ohio in newspapers under 100,000 circulation, the category in which the Chronicle competes. Brad Dicken won a third place in the same category.

• Patti Ewald won a second place as Best Columnist in Ohio and the staff won a first place for its Page 1 design.

Other awards were:

• Brad Dicken, third place, Best Criminal Justice reporting for “Inside the death house.”

• Shawn Foucher, first place, Best Deadline Reporting for “Inferno consumes two-story warehouse.”

• Brad Dicken, second place, Best Deadline Reporting for “State executes Filiaggi.”

• Cindy Leise, second place, Best Environmental Coverage for “Uncorrected sewer violations.”

• Shawn Foucher, second place, Best Explanatory Journalism for “Catalytic converters.”

• Brad Dicken, second place, Best Government Reporting.

• Brad Dicken, third place, Best Investigative Reporting for “CHP buys up land.”

• Shawn Foucher, second place, Best Use of Public Records, for “Unreleased reports.”
