Woman paralyzed from park shooting is heading home

Shawn Stevens is coming home.

It’s been nearly four months since Stevens was shot, beaten, sexually assaulted and left for dead on May 6 while walking at the Carlisle Reservation.

Stevens – who is paralyzed from the waist down – spoke to the media this morning at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland shortly before she was due to be discharged from the hospital that has taken care of her since the attack.

Stevens, who was joined by one of her doctors and her husband, Mark Stevens, said she was looking forward to BBQ chicken and corn on the cob when she returns to her Carlisle Township home today.

Although she’s going home, Stevens said she isn’t giving up her fight to walk again. She said she has been able to move one of her feet without help and has some limited feeling in her legs.

“Hopefully, I’ll get out of this chair,” she said.

Meanwhile, Matthew Plas – the man accused of attacking her – remains behind bars, awaiting trial.
