Miss. governor says evacuations to begin

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour says Katrina victims still living in trailers along Mississippi’s coast should begin evacuating this weekend as Gustav approaches.

Forecasters say it is possible the storm could hit anywhere along the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle to Texas as a major hurricane next week.

Roughly 2,700 government-provided trailers remain occupied along Mississippi’s 70-mile coast, which was badly hit by Katrina three years ago. Officials are concerned because trailers are vulnerable to damage in high winds.

The order also applies to some of the 2,800 cottages built as an alternative to trailers.

Barbour says notices are going out to trailer residents on Saturday, and the first trailers in coastal Mississippi will be evacuated Sunday morning.
