High school football: Admiral King pulls away from Toledo Scott in second half, goes 2-0 for first time in 20 years

LORAIN — Mark Campo describes Admiral King’s 2-0 start like climbing a ladder.
“There are ten rungs on the ladder and we’re up to two,” the Admirals coach said. “We’ve got to get up to No. 3.”
It’s been 20 years since Admiral King opened a season with two wins. The Admirals welcome Berea to George Daniel Field on Friday — the third of seven home games for King at the venerable Lorain landmark.
Saturday, once King controlled Toledo Scott’s primary weapon — Armond Richardson — it took control of the game and won going away, 51-22.
The Admirals punished the Bulldogs with a great ground game led by Anthony Harrison and Chris Kimbro. Harrison bulled through Scott’s line and then darted and dashed his way to 181 yards and three touchdowns on just a dozen carries. Kimbro added 65 and one score, although it could have been more. He had a 47-yard TD run called back for an illegal block.
The Admirals opened the game with a quick 43-yard pass to tight end Rayshawn Morgan from Chad Hall that nearly went all the way.
Admiral King finished with 376 yards on the ground and 440 total.
“Our offense played a complete ballgame,” Campo said. “We cleaned up the penalty situation. We blocked, we stayed on them, we hit the holes, we broke tackles. I thought it was a great game by the offense. We even threw a little bit.
“And the defense in the second half rose to the occasion. The thing I’m most pleased about is that 22 number is still up there on the scoreboard just as it was at halftime.”
Adrian Casey ran back an interception 36 yards early in the third quarter that took the starch out of Toledo Scott.
Number 22 had a double meaning. The Bulldogs were still very much alive at halftime, down only 32-22 and getting the ball to start the third quarter. Richardson wears number 22 and had all three Scott touchdowns and 127 yards on the ground at intermission.
“(Toledo Scott) had people that can make plays if you let them get loose,” Campo said. “That’s the key. We’re going to see a lot more of those type of teams and those type of athletes. We can’t let them loose.”
In the second half, Richardson found the going a little tougher. He added only 18 yards to his total and Scott didn’t get a first down until the game was well in hand.
Casey, Kimbro, Fernando Otero, Dale Linder, John Gerber, Michael Taylor, Quentin Watson and Gary Donald all came up with big defensive plays for the Admirals. Kimbro, Gerber and Theo Smith all had interceptions.
“Those are all seniors,” said Campo. “They all understand if they get a chance, they can make things happen.”
NO TIME: Kimbro’s 50-yard touchdown not only caught Toledo Scott napping but surprised WEOL’s play-by-play man Rob Polinsky as well. Officials had just made the signal to end the first quarter but because a penalty was called on the last play of the quarter, Admiral King got to run an untimed play. Kimbro made it a memorable one — scampering 50 yards with a great run. Unfortunately, Polinsky had gone to commercial and listeners did not hear the call live.
