Medvetz helps Elyria serve a loss to Brush on volleyball court

ELYRIA — It’s amazing that Amanda Medvetz didn’t need a sling for her arm after Elyria’s volleyball match against Brush on Tuesday night.
The senior was the Pioneers’ first server in the Northeast Ohio Conference crossover match, and she served and served and then served some more.
Her strong arm helped Elyria win the first 18 points of the match before a powerful shot by the Pioneers went past the end line to end the run. It was no contest after that as Elyria (3-2) routed the Arcs 25-6, 25-13 and 25-8.
In the 18-0 start, Medvetz had five aces, Kristen Boros had two slams and a tip kill, Jacque Hawes had two slams and a block kill and Jazmyn Corlew added a slam.
Brush (3-4) was more competitive in Game 2 and actually had five brief leads — the last at 7-6 — before Brigette Jones took over as server and engineered a 5-0 run that gave the Pioneers the lead to stay. Courtney Jones had three aces in the second game, Boros two — the final one to win the game — and Brigette Jones one.
The third game had Brush in front 3-1 before Elyria once again went on runs of five and seven to complete the rout.
“I can’t ever remember coming out with an 18-0 start in any match I’ve played in,” said Medvetz, “We just executed well then and all night. We came out and played our game.”
In attendance as a fan, Carol Russo — Elyria’s Hall of Fame coach who retired two years ago — said after the match that she remembers once when the Pioneers swept a match 15-0, 15-0 before rally scoring was adopted a few years ago.
Current Elyria coach Jodie Johnson was beaming after the match.
“The girls came out on fire,“ she said. “It was our first home match and they were excited. They worked hard.”
Medvetz and Boros led the Pioneers with 10 kills apiece while Brigette Jones was right behind with eight. Medvetz led the team with the five aces she earned during the opening run, followed by Boros with four.
Courtney Jones led in assists with 27 and digs with 12, while Boros had eight digs.
“I think we came out intimidated,” Brush coach Jen Tatman said. “They were thinking about Elyria’s reputation and the fact they are in the larger school Valley Division and we are in the Lake (Division). My girls were not mentally prepared tonight. It was very frustrating as a coach. We got a little run going in the second game and it was 7-7 when we made three straight errors and then it was ‘Uh, oh.’”
The match between the two NOC schools did not count in the league standings because the two are in different divisions.
Elyria won the junior varsity match 25-5, 25-13.
