Midway JCPenney appears to be safe
The opening of the JCPenney in Avon has been billed as the end of the larger and much older JCPenney store at Midway Mall.
But that’s not the case, said Sharon Loughner, company spokeswoman.
She said there are plans to eventually add a Sephora cosmetic retailer to the Midway Mall store, too.
She said company executives have firmly decided not to close the 42-year-old, 157,000-square-foot Elyria location when the new Avon one opens, despite rumors that it has been on the chopping block for nearly a year.
The Avon location is intended to reach new shoppers, not poach ones from Elyria, as the company doesn’t see the two stores competing.
“We’re looking at pulling a lot more customers from the Crocker area,” Loughner said.
