COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Given the still widespread power outages in Ohio, officials are giving people a little more time to pay any state taxes due this week.

More than 1 million Ohio homes and businesses remain without electricity following the state’s lashing from remnants of Hurricane Ike on Sunday. State Tax Commissioner Richard Levin (LEH’-vihn) says that’s causing some real difficulty for taxpayers, including businesses that have no electricity but need to submit taxes withheld from employees.

So, Levin announced Tuesday that any tax bills or returns with deadlines this week may be filed by Monday without penalty.

However, any interest on the overdue payments will still be owed.
