Tribe notes: Scott Lewis shows he can handle adversity

CLEVELAND — Scott Lewis’ streak of consecutive scoreless innings came to an end at 15 Sunday, with the left-hander allowing a run in the second inning of the Indians’ 10-5 victory over the Tigers.
His perfect record remained intact.
Lewis, whose scoreless-innings streak to begin a big league career is the longest by a Cleveland pitcher since 1969, improved to 3-0 in three starts since joining Cleveland’s rotation as a September call-up from Triple-A Buffalo.
The Ohio State product, who has battled arm injuries since his college days, wasn’t as sharp as he was in his first two outings — three runs on eight hits through five innings — but his performance was almost as impressive to Indians manager Eric Wedge.
Wedge was interested to see how Lewis, 25, would handle his first taste of big league adversity.
“Obviously, he ran through those first two starts pretty well,” Wedge said. “He didn’t have it early on today, but he kept fighting through it. It was great to see him fight through those innings.
“That’s great to see from any pitcher, particularly a young pitcher like that.”
Lewis found himself in jams over the first three innings, but allowed just a run apiece in the second and third to keep the Tigers in check.
“In big situations like that, you just want to limit the damage,” Lewis said. “I was happy to only give up one in each of those situations.”

Lee finally takes curtain call

The Progressive Field crowd acknowledged Indians ace Cliff Lee when a highlight montage from the Cy Young candidate’s stellar season flashed on the videotron in the ninth inning.
Lee, who did not grant the fans’ wish for a curtain call in his final home start Wednesday against the Twins, tipped his cap and waved it to the crowd from the top of the dugout steps.
