Toledo mayor, officials to be furloughed 2 days

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Toledo’s mayor, the city’s police and fire chiefs and more than 60 other city employees each will be taking two days off without pay.

That’s one of several steps announced by Mayor Carty Finkbeiner’s office in the face of a multi-million-dollar shortfall in the city’s operating budget.

Municipal employees also are giving up their city cell phones, those who take city vehicles home have to pay for their own gas, and Toledo officials are looking at whether to lay off more than a dozen city workers.

Finkbeiner Chief of Staff Robert Reinbolt says he expects the deficit in the city’s operating fund to hit the neighborhood of $5 million by year-end.

Reinbolt says the mandatory two-day furloughs for managers and other nonunion employees might save $50,000.
