Elyria police chief’s son killed in Iraq

ELYRIA — The son of Elyria police Chief Michael Medders has been killed in Iraq.

Elyria police Capt. Dan Jaykel said his department learned today that Michael Medders Jr., 26, was killed. When it happened, and exactly what happened, aren’t known yet, he said.

“This is just tragic,’’ he said. “We all live for our families and to have something as tragic as this happen, it’s devastating.’’

A graduate of Avon Lake High School and Bowling Green State University, the younger Medders enlisted in the Army after graduating from college.

The elder Medders said his son wanted to enlist right after 9/11, but that he talked him into waiting until he had received his degree.

At the end of May, the younger Medders was injured by a roadside explosion about 30 miles north of Baghdad. He suffered only a concussion as a result.
