Lorain PD fires Marrero

LORAIN — Suspended Lorain Police Officer Stanley Marrero was given his notice of termination Thursday while in the Lorain County Jail where he’s currently serving his two-month prison sentence, according to Lorain Safety Director Phil Dore.

Dore concluded in the seven-page termination letter that Marrero had made multiple violations of the city’s and police department’s code of conduct, in addition to breaking the law.

As a result, Marrero, a 17-year veteran of the force who had been suspended since his indictment last year, will officially be off the city’s payroll today.

Marrero, 44, was found guilty Sept. 9 of misdemeanor charges of intimidation, dereliction of duty and public indecency by Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Edward Zaleski, who found that Marrero had exposed himself to a Lorain woman in 2006 and asked for oral sex and threatened to withhold police protection from her if she told anyone about the incident.

Marrero also was convicted of failing to break up a January 2007 fight between two women with whom he was having affairs and not reporting the incident, even though one of the women had her nose broken. The other woman was later convicted of assault.

Several other charges against Marrero were thrown out during the trial, including those related to allegations he had sex with several women while on duty.

Marrero insisted he was innocent during his trial and again before he was sent to prison. He’s already appealed his conviction.

Robert Phillips, Marrero’s police union attorney, said he hasn’t seen the decision firing Marrero, but it was something he expected to happen.

“There’s been lots of ups and downs,” he said. “Am I surprised? The answer is no. Will we fight it? The answer is yes.”

Under the union contract, Marrero can appeal his firing.

Marrero also continues to face rape and other charges stemming from 15-year-old allegations that accuse him of forcing himself on a woman he met while responding to a call at her home. He has pleaded not guilty to those charges, but no trial date has been set.
