Community pays respect to fallen Army captain

One of Lorain County’s own came home today.

The body of Army Capt. Michael Medders Jr. arrived by plane at the Lorain County Regional Airport, where family and friends waited.

Medders, 25, who was killed Friday by a suicide bomber in Jisr Naft, Iraq, is the son of Elyria police Chief Michael Medders and his wife, Lynn.

After the plane arrived, representatives of nearly every local police department, fire department and other safety agencies escorted the hearse on a processional route that wound through Elyria – pausing in front of the Elyria Police Department – before making its way to the Busch funeral home in Avon Lake.

All along the way, people were on hand to show their respect – waving flags and standing solemnly along roads and sidewalks as the lengthy procession traveled past.

Visitation for Medders will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Avon Lake High School. Additional hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the high school.

The funeral Mass will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 32929 Lake Road, Avon Lake.
