Cross country players of the week
Matt Link, Avon Lake
YEAR: Junior
LAST WEEK: Finished third at the Southwestern Conference meet at LCCC with a course-best time of 16:48. He helped the Shoremen finish second.
OTHER SPORT: Track
BIO: Link was all-county last fall and the Shoremen’s team MVP. He was a 2006 Division I regional qualifier as a team member. Last spring, he was a regional qualifier in the 3,200. Link is a member of Key Club, ski club and varsity club. He played basketball and soccer each for over six years, plus did baseball three years before concentrating solely on running. Link began running road races in second grade and started track in the fifth grade for St. Raphael’s. He has a 3.6-grade-point average.

Brianna Shaw, Clearview
YEAR: Senior
LAST WEEK: Won the Patriot Athletic Conference meet at the Lorain County Equestrian Center on Saturday with a time of 20:47. She is the first Clearview athlete — boy or girl — to win a conference cross country title.
OTHER SPORT: Track
BIO: Shaw is a two-time Division II state qualifier in the 800 meters, finishing ninth at the state meet both in 2006 and ’07. Last year, she broke an accessory bone to the navicular in her right foot during cross country at midseason. Shaw finished out the season, although her times suffered. Shaw was a 2006 Division II regional qualifier. She is a member of NHS and the school yearbook staff. Shaw takes PSEO (post-secondary education option) classes at LCCC. She plans to major in journalism in college. Shaw has a 3.925 gpa.
