High school soccer notes: Elyria Catholic’s Cecil finishes just as he started
Could it be merely a coincidence? Or is there something otherworldly going on here?
Evan Cecil scored the fifth goal in Elyria Catholic’s 5-0 victory over Elyria High on Saturday at Knights of Columbus Field. It completed an interlocking series of firsts and lasts.
As a freshman in 2005, he scored the first goal in the first game of his first varsity season. It was the first year he played soccer at any level.
His goal Saturday was the final goal of the final regular-season game of his final high school season.
A fortuitous alignment of the planets perhaps? Apparently not.
“That was quite a coincidence,” Cecil said. “I’m just happy to be playing soccer and to being part of this team.”
Lindsly sets record
Senior Cheryl Lindsly, Oberlin’s senior goalkeeper, broke her own school saves record when she posted two shutouts last week. In the first, against Open Door, she made five saves, which eclipsed the record of 187 she set in 2006.
In the second shutout, she added nine saves in a Patriot Athletic Conference win over Brooklyn. Lindsly finished the regular season with 212 saves. She entered sectional tournament play with 510 saves in her three-year varsity career.
Generous fans
Elyria and Elyria Catholic fans contributed $115 and more than 200 pounds of food to the Salvation Army when they attended the boys and girls junior varsity matches at Pioneer Field on Saturday. There was no admission fee, but spectators were asked to contribute canned food or an amount of money of their choice.
It was the idea of EHS athletics director Jerry Chizmar. The schools might try it again next season.
Champs gather
A lot of coaching talent showed up to watch the Bay girls tie Avon for the West Shore Conference championship on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
A tie, a sweep
Avon, Bay and Rocky River have ended the nip-and-tuck West Shore Conference girls race in a three-way tie. The Rockets and Pirates caught up with Avon’s Eagles last Wednesday night. Bay knocked off Avon, 2-1, and River dumped Fairview, 1-0. Avon had led by a game going into the final night of WSC action.
And the Westlake girls made it a Demons sweep of the Southwestern Conference championships when they knocked off Amherst 5-1 last week.
The Westlake boys had already clinched the title outright. The girls led by a game on the final night of the SWC season. Both Demons teams ran the table.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Brian Lauer, North Olmsted
YEAR: Senior

He is a two-year unanimous All-Southwestern Conference selection and was named second-team All-Greater Cleveland in 2007. He’s also on the basketball team. His club soccer team is Excalibur. Enjoys his science classes, especially chemistry and physics.
LOOKING AHEAD: Undecided about playing college soccer and about where he’ll go to school. Would like to be a pharmacist.
Jenna Madison, North Olmsted
YEAR: Senior
POSITION: Forward
LAST WEEK: Madison scored all five goals in a 5-3 win over Amherst, a goal and an assist in a 3-1 defeat of West Geauga, a goal in a 2-1 loss to Southwestern Conference champion Westlake and one of two Eagles goals in a shutout of archrival Olmsted Falls.
BIO: She’s tied with Elise Sharpe of Tippecanoe for 11th in the state and ranks fourth in Northeast Ohio with 21 goals on the season. She was the team’s most valuable player last season, was named to the All-Southwestern Conference first team and was a first-team All-Greater Cleveland selection. Also plays club soccer. She enjoys her interior design and art classes and likes to hang out with friends.
LOOKING AHEAD: Hopes to play college soccer, but is undecided as to where.
