TENNIS
Nikki Chiricosta, Avon Lake
YEAR: Junior
POSITION: First singles
RECORD: 29-3
THIS WEEK’S PERFORMANCE: Chiricosta earned her third straight trip to the Division I state tournament with a third-place finish at the districts in Oberlin last weekend. Chiricosta rebounded from a semifinal loss to Kyle McPhillips — the top-ranked Division I singles player in the state — to pull out a three-set victory over Christine Coffman in the consolation match.
BIO: Chiricosta enjoys rollerblading and playing pingpong with friends and family members. She is even trying to get a table tennis club started at the high school. She’s also a member of the Math and Science, Spanish and Varsity Clubs at Avon Lake. Chiricosta enjoys traveling, which she does frequently while playing in USTA tournaments. She has been as far as California and Florida, and plays all over the Midwest.
PARENTS: Rick and Sheila Chiricosta
GOLF
Kyle Kmiecik, St. Ignatius
YEAR: Junior
WHAT HE DID: The Avon resident shot a 4-over 76 (40-36) at the Division I district tournament at Pine Hills on Oct. 8 to help lead the Wildcats to the team title and a state tournament berth with an impressive 308 on a rainy and windy day. On Saturday, he shot a 2-over 74 (37-37) at Muirfield Village, home of the Memorial Tournament, as the Wildcats won the prestigious nine-team tournament with another 308, easily topping runner-up Columbus Watterson by 13 shots. The win came against fellow state qualifiers Watterson, St. Xavier and Upper Arlington.
INTERESTS: After a long day on the course or the practice range, just likes to relax, maybe go out with friends or watch a movie at a friend’s house. Is a rabid St. Ignatius football fan. Played Premier Soccer, mostly forward, until he started high school. Ended his soccer career on top, winning a state championship with Cleveland United in his final season.
FUTURE PLANS: Definitely wants to play college golf and is being recruited by several schools. Thinking about majoring in business.
FAVORITE GOLFER: Tiger Woods
PARENTS: Tom and Maria
