The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present. Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Jane Birkbeck Hess, 73, of Scottsdale, Arizona passed away Tuesday September 30, 2008. Jane was born on June 10, 1935 to Dr. Stanley J. and Mari H. Birkbeck in Elyria.
Jane graduated from Elyria Catholic High School in 1953 and then attended Barry College in Florida. It was there that she became acquainted with Ray Robert Hess USMC, the son of Arthur P. and Ruth M. Hess, family friends from Elyria. After Ray’s discharge from the Marine Corp, the two were married in Elyria on October 8th, 1955. Jane worked in the blood bank at Elyria Memorial Hospital before her marriage and continued there until their son Michael J. was born. Following a move to Hawaii, then returning to Ohio, Ray and Jane relocated to Southern California where Jane worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Ten years later, they settled in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ray and Jane owned and operated the WaterMart Store and Arizona Kid’z in Scottsdale.
Jane was a past choir member and active Sodalist at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.
She is survived by her her husband Ray; daughter, Margaret E. Hess, who cared for her during the past several years; sisters, Mary Margaret O’Donnell (Robert) of Elyria, and Dorothy B. Meek (Orville) of Kent, Washington; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by their son, Michael; and sister Barbara White-Graham.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Scottsdale, Arizona.
