Local representatives retain seats in House

Both the congresswomen representing Lorain County will be returning to Washington for another term if the lopsided leads they enjoyed as of press time today are any indication.

U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton, D-Copley Township, beat out political novice Republican challenger Dave Potter, while U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo, defeated Republican Bradley Leavitt for the second time in two years to win her 14th consecutive term.

Vote tallies from those ballots counted as of press time showed Sutton leading with 167,747 votes, or 64.6 percent, to Potter’s 91,763 votes, or 35.4 percent of the vote.

Kaptur, D-Toledo, won 162,164 votes, or 75.3 percent of the vote, to Leavitt’s 53,124 votes, or 24.7 percent, according to unofficial election returns that had been tabulated as of press time.

In a statement issued late Tuesday, Sutton said residents in her district, which includes the northern half of Lorain County as well as portions of Cuyahoga, Medina and Summit counties, “expressed a clear message: ‘We need a government that works with us.’ The hard-working people I serve want and deserve opportunity.”

Sutton said her priorities upon returning to Congress would be an economic recovery package focusing on investment in American’s infrastructure “which will directly create jobs and economic opportunities.”
