Avon’s O’Rourke, Lutheran West’s Fackler named All-District top players

Avon turned in a perfect 10-0 regular season, captured its first West Shore Conference title and plays Saturday night for a Division III regional championship.
So, it’s no surprise that the Eagles are littered all over the 2008 Associated Press All-District teams, led by senior quarterback Ryan O’Rourke’s selection as the Offensive Player of the Year and Mike Elder being named the D-III Coach of the Year.
“It’s a great honor for our kids,” Elder said. “I told them to remember that if our team wasn’t successful, we probably wouldn’t have seven individuals on (the first team) and two second-teamers. Without the hard work of all their teammates, it wouldn’t have been possible to get all those names on that list.”
Fifteen area schools had players land on the All-District first teams, highlighted by the Avon special awards and that of Lutheran West senior quarterback Paul Fackler being named the Division V co-Offensive Player of the Year and Clearview’s Mike Collier being named the Division IV Coach of the Year.
“It’s definitely flattering,” Collier said. “There are so many good coaches in the area. Good kids make good coaches and I think everyone knows that’s what happened this year. My players made me look good.”
The Clippers also finished with an unblemished 10-0 regular season, captured the Patriot Athletic Conference championship and earned a playoff berth. For those accomplishments, they landed eight on the All-District lists — highlighted by first-teamers Anthony Hitchens, James Washington, Lucas Wright and Alex Zsigray.
Making the playoffs and earning a share of the Southwestern Conference championship also helped Avon Lake to a good All-District showing. The Shoremen had five players on the first team and four on the second team in Division II.
Other successful programs that had good All-District showings included: Admiral King — three first-teamers and a second-teamer in Division I, Vermilion — three first-teamers and four second-teamers in Division III and Elyria Catholic — six first-teamers in Division IV.
But the year definitely belonged to the Eagles.
“Winning this (Player of the Year) award really shows the type of team I have,” said O’Rourke, who has thrown for 32 touchdowns and no interceptions this season. “This is nice, but I wasn’t really looking for any individual awards this year. My goals for the season centered around things for our team, like winning and getting to the playoffs.
“All the things that have happened for us and for me are things that you dream of as a player, and, right now, it’s coming true.”
O’Rourke said the award belongs not just to him, but to all the players on his team — including those on the defense — who have helped thrust the program into the spotlight.
Elder nearly matched O’Rourke’s comments when discussing his Coach of the Year award.
“I’m very grateful, it’s a nice honor,” Elder said. “But it’s more of a staff award in my opinion. I give a lot of responsibility to my coaches, and it’s like we have seven head coaches on our football team — each one of them is responsible for their area.
“It’s something I have to share with all of them.”
