High school football: Sylvania Southview crushes Akron Hoban in Division II state semifinal
Alex Pidcock threw two touchdown passes and Michael Hehl rushed for two other TDs to lead Sylvania Southview to a 31-0 win over Akron Hoban in a Division II state semifinal Friday night in Fremont.
Shaun Joplin caught a 60-yard pass from Pidcock in the second quarter for Sylvania Southview (14-0). Pidcock’s second touchdown pass was a 21-yarder to Jimmy Hall in the fourth.
It was the first time Akron Hoban (9-5) was shut out this season.
Southview will face Cincinnati Anderson in next Friday’s state championship.
Cincinnati Anderson 14, Columbus DeSales 10
Kyle Slater ran for 255 yards and a touchdown to lead Cincinnati Anderson past Columbus DeSales in a Division II state seminal game at Dayton.
Anderson (12-2), the defending state champion, lost to DeSales 38-17 in the regular season, but used a big-play defense to get the win this time.
Slater’s 17-yard run made it 7-0 with 6:52 left in the first half, and the Redskins followed up with a goal-line stand just before halftime.
An interception by Luke Bissinger set up an eight-yard TD run by quarterback Daniel Rod with 5:38 to go in the third quarter that put Anderson up 14-0.
DeSales running back Adam Griffin — son of former Ohio State and Cincinnati Bengals running back Archie Griffin — ran for a 79-yard TD on the next possession, but the Stallions (13-1) couldn’t score again.
DeSales will play Sylvania Southview in next week’s championship.
DIVISION IV
Steubenville 30, New Lexington 6
Demetrius Brandon rushed for 177 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Dwight Macon ran for a TD and threw for another as Steubenville beat New Lexington in a Division IV semifinal game in Massillon.
Steubenville’s Branko Busick ran in a one-yard score in the first quarter and Isiah Willis blocked a punt that New Lexington recovered in its own end zone for a safety. Macon followed with a 29-yard scoring pass to Michael Goodwin before the end of the quarter to make it 16-0.
New Lexington (12-2) gained only 80 yards in the first half, but managed to get a 3-yard touchdown run from quarterback Clint Cannon in the second quarter.
Steubenville (14-0) will play Kettering Alter in next week’s final, a rematch of the 2006 Division III final.
Kettering Alter 42, Genoa Area 34
Chris Borland ran for 119 yards and he and Justin Hall each rushed for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to ensure Kettering Alter’s win over Genoa Area in a Division IV state semifinal at Findlay.
Several key quarterback option runs by Austin Boucher set up Hall’s two-yard score that put Kettering (12-2) ahead 35-27 early in the fourth.
Boucher had a 15-yard run and Hall had a 20-yard gain on Kettering’s next drive to set up Borland’s 6-yard rushing TD that made it 42-27 with 7:32 to play.
Blair Skilliter’s second scoring run of the game got Genoa (13-1) within 42-34 with 1:24 to play, but the Comets couldn’t get the ball again.
Genoa’s Matt Bassitt completed 13 of 23 passes for 281 yards, including a 52-yard TD strike to Skilliter and a 56-yard scoring pass to Zach Apel.
DIVISION VI
Hopewell-Loudon 55, Malvern 20
Aaron Kapelka ran for four touchdowns and Tyler Brown threw three touchdown passes
in a snowstorm to lead Hopewell-Loudon into its second straight Division VI state championship game with a win over Malvern in Ashland.
Brown was 18-of-22 passing for 269 yards, while Aaron Kapelka rushed for 164 yards on 25 carries for Hopewell-Loudon (14-0).
Jesse Locke scored on 1-yard and 8-yard runs while quarterback Tyler Tucci threw a 78-yard scoring pass to Vince Larson for Malvern (13-1).
Hopewell-Loudon will play Delphos St. John’s (12-2) in next Friday’s state title game in Massillon.
Delphos St. John’s 32, Sidney Lehman 13
Jordan Leininger ran for three first-half touchdowns as Delphos St. John’s beat Sidney Lehman Catholic in a Division VI semifinal game at Wapakoneta.
Wes Ulm threw for a score and ran for another for St. John’s, which led 26-0 at halftime. Leininger ran for 98 yards on 22 carries, while fullback Matt Brinkman gained 87 yards on nine carries.
Lehman (11-2) scored twice in the third quarter on Kaleb Goins’ one-yard run and Zac Schmitz’ 34-yard run to cut it to 26-13.
St. John’s will play Hopewell-Loudon in next Friday’s state championship game.
