Ohio State 42, Michigan 7: Breaking it down
THUMBS UP
Ohio State RB Chris ‘Beanie’ Wells
The junior had his usual big game against Michigan, rushing for 134 yards and a touchdown despite missing the majority of the second half with a hamstring injury. His 59-yard run in the first quarter accounted for the first points of the game and snapped the Buckeyes out of their offensive funk. Wells has scored on TD runs of more than 50 yards in each of his three games against the Wolverines.
THUMBS DOWN
Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez
Adding another dubious accomplishment to his disastrous debut as Wolverine coach, Rodriguez became just the second coach in UM history to lose his first meeting with Ohio State — the first since Harry Kipke lost in 1929. Rodriguez’s offensive game plan left something to be desired, with the Wolverines using only a handful of plays — and not very effectively.
TURNING POINT
Leading 14-7 after stopping Michigan’s opening drive of the second half, Ohio State needed just two plays to score from its own 9-yard-line. “Beanie” Wells got loose for 42 yards on the first one and Dan “Boom” Herron, left, followed with a 49-yard touchdown run that put the Buckeyes up by two TDs minutes into the third quarter. It was the first seven of 28 unanswered points scored by OSU.
