Ohio’s former elections chief eyeing RNC bid

CINCINNATI (AP) — Former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell is considering a run for chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Blackwell is one of two black men vying for the opposing party’s helm as America prepares to seat its first black president.

The 60-year-old Blackwell told The Cincinnati Enquirer that members of the 168-member committee began calling him last week and urging him to run.

Since his unsuccessful bid for governor in 2006, Blackwell has frequently appeared as a national commentator on conservative issues.

Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, another black Republican who ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2006, is also considering the job.
