High school hockey: Bay drops Baron Cup III game

BROOKLYN — With about 4:30 to play in the overtime period, Bay goalie Dan Scheufler made a beautiful stop on a breakaway by Aurora’s Aaron Jaskiewicz.
Schuefler could not do the same thing two minutes and 40 seconds later. Jaskiewicz made good on another clear shot at the goal, lofting the puck over Scheufler’s left shoulder and into the highest part of the net to give Aurora a 6-5 victory in a Baron Cup III first-round game Monday at John Coyne Recreation Center.
That goal, Jaskiewicz’s third of the game, finished a startling comeback by the Greenmen. The third period began with fifth-seeded Bay leading 5-0, with the Rockets having taken twice as many shots on goal.
That was before No. 4 seed Aurora (14-12) scored three goals over a 1:16 stretch early in the third, added a goal eight seconds into a power play and tied the score with 38 seconds left after removing goalie Ronnie Schwartz.
“When something like that starts happening, that’s when your team has to band together,” Bay coach Terry Chadwick. “Everyone has to take responsibility for his own actions. We didn’t come apart, but we didn’t band together, either.
“It’s like the saying, ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get going.’ The going got tough and we did not respond.  We did play better toward the end of the period, but we couldn’t put in that sixth goal.”
Buddy Martin had three goals for Bay (25-5-2) and Luke Heberle scored the other two. The Rockets scored on two power plays in the first period and took a 3-0 advantage. A pair of goals in the final 3:30 of the second gave the Rockets the 5-0 lead.
Dave Walker ended the shutout at 2:38 of the third. Jaskiewicz scored a goal 16 seconds after that and Walker scored his second goal 27 seconds later.
On Aurora’s only power-play opportunity, Walker took the face-off from Jesper Sandsjo and skated in to push one past Scheufler and make it a 5-4 game. The Greenmen yanked Schwartz with 55.2 seconds remaining, with the puck about to be dropped in Bay’s end because of a call for playing the puck with a high stick.
The Rockets could never get the puck out of their end, and Jaskiewicz scored at 14:22 to force overtime.
Aurora will play the winner of Monday’s first-round game between No. 1 seed Solon and No. 8 West Geauga on Saturday, 3 p.m.
