High school softball: Elyria’s Tess Sito sizzles at the plate and on the mound as Pioneers go 2-0 at Prebis Memorial Classic
LAGRANGE — One home run, a double, single, two RBIs, a game-winning hit, three runs scored, a 17-strikeout no-hitter, a 10-strikeout two-hitter and two pitching victories.
It nearly takes the breath away.
It seems awkward sometimes, even a little fussy, to focus on the accomplishments of one athlete. But re-examine the numbers put together by one player on a single afternoon and they tell you you’re foolish if you don’t.
Fussy. Foolish. Let’s err on the side of fussy and say the numbers detailed here make up the resume of Elyria’s Tess Sito for two games of high school softball.
She compiled them as the Pioneers (16-2) won their first two games in the third annual Prebis Memorial Classic on Friday afternoon at Community Park.
Sito’s wasn’t the only good performance of the nine-game afternoon. But it was the most conspicuous as Elyria downed Uniontown Lake, 2-0, on her two- run homer, and Massillon Jackson, 7-0, on her two-hitter.
The Pioneers benefited from the batting of freshman outfielder Alanna Williams and sophomore shortstop Kristen Boros.
Host Keystone, playing just one game, defeated Nordonia, 2-0. Midview and Wellington split two games each. The Middies bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Columbus St. Frances DeSales after losing to Canfield 1-0. Wellington ripped Nordonia 7-3 after losing its opener to Twinsburg, 8-5.
In the only other game, Uniontown Lake rebounded from its loss to Sito and the Pioneers with a 13-0 thrashing of Canfield. The round-robin concludes with 10 games today, five scheduled for 1 p.m. and five more at 4. Massillon Jackson and Canfield will not return. They’ll be replaced today by Elyria Catholic and Tallmadge.
“I felt good when I was warming up, but I didn’t feel very good when I got in there in the first inning,” Sito said, expressing surprise she had hurled a no-hitter against Lake. “But everything just kept getting stronger. They were hitting the ball, but we were making plays. My defense was awesome.”
Sito’s third-inning, two-run homer over the right-center field fence was all the offense the Pioneers needed.
In the rout of Massillon Jackson, Elyria got two hits — including a double — and two RBIs from Williams and two singles and an RBI from Boros. Freshman Alyssa Barker also doubled and drove in a run. And another freshman, Darien Ward, produced a run with a nearly perfect squeeze bunt in Elyria’s four-run second inning.
Senior Kara Dill saw double pitching duty in Keystone’s victory over Nordonia. She struck out four in hurling the first three innings, then added two more K’s when she returned to the circle to put out a fire in the seventh. The Wildcats improved to 15-1.
Freshman pitcher Bee Shaw got the win. She got into a jam in the seventh, walked in a run and coach Jim Piazza asked Dill to return with the bases loaded. Dill, the Wildcats’ senior star, struck out the next two batters and ended the game on a routine grounder to the right side.
“I’m used to that kind of situation because it’s a lot easier for me than pitching seven innings,” Dill said. “Personally, it’s just easier, so it works out well.”
Wellington lost its opener to Twinsburg despite belting two home runs and staging a four-run seventh-inning rally. But the Dukes came back big against Nordonia. Junior Jackie Bankston led the attack with three hits in four at-bats, Callie McConnell was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, pitcher Cassie Gleisner — who struck out six — was 2-for-2 with a walk and Shelby Monschein also doubled for the Dukes.
Midview surrendered a run in the first inning and it held up in a 1-0 opening-game loss to Canfield. But the Middies (8-7) turned the tables when their first-inning run was enough to defeat DeSales in the second round.
Heather Miller, Ann Turner, Jillian Kazmierczak, Paige Stefancin and Sydney Mencke all singled for the Middies. Delaina DeVencenzo drove Mencke home with the Midview run. Senior Brittany Stone struck out five and walked none in pitching a two-hitter.
