Chess tournament
Lorain Schools will host the first-ever Classic Cafe Chess Tournament from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Southview High School cafeteria. The tournament is free and open to the public.
More than 16 students from grades three to 12 from across the city`s schools will participate.
Each student is guaranteed four matches in round-robin play. Prizes will be offered.
Pizzerias needed
Easter Seals Northern Ohio is looking for Lorain County pizzerias that are interested in being a part of the “A Slice of Heaven” Pizza Bakeoff sponsored by UAW Local 2000.
The bakeoff is Oct. 13, and attendees will vote for the winner of Best Pizza in Lorain County. All proceeds benefit Easter Seals. For information, call (440) 324-6600, ext. 12.
Variety show
RE-CREATION will present its “Glamorous” variety show at 7 p.m. May 16 at Clearview High School.
Donations are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and veterans, $3 for ages 6 to 12 and free for kids 5 and younger. To purchase tickets, call (440) 937-1095 or (440) 244-2603. Tickets are available at the door.
Calling all parade participants
The Lorain Memorial Association is looking for bands, marching groups, auto units, color guards, groups with floats and others to participate in the annual Memorial Day Parade scheduled for 11 a.m. May 25 on Broadway, Lorain.

Homeless walk
Lorain`s Neighborhood House Association is holding a fundraising run and walk this morning at Lorain County Community College`s North Campus, Ewing Recreation Center.
Registration starts at 7 a.m. A 5-K run begins at 8:30 a.m., and a one-mile walk begins at 9:30 a.m. Awards will be handed out at 10 a.m. Cost is $25.
Money raised will go to the Haven Center homeless shelter, 1536 E. 30th St., Lorain.
Free car class
A free car care seminar for women will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Great Lakes Automotive Clinic, 5400 E. Lake Road, Sheffield Lake. Women attending the event will receive a thank-you bag that includes tire and depth gauge, coupons for service and additional items.
There will be raffles, prizes and light refreshments. Participants must register before Monday by calling Great Lakes Automotive Clinic at (440) 949-2698.
Lundy listens
State Rep. Matt Lundy, D-Elyria, will hold a “Lundy Listens” monthly meeting to hear the concerns of citizens at 7 p.m. May 28 at the Sheffield Village Municipal Complex, 4340 Colorado Ave., Sheffield.
Military graduates
Air Force Airman Jason Brady graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, after completing an eight-week program. Brady is the son of Diane Brady of Lorain and graduated from Vermilion High School in 2007.
Air Force Reserve Airman Natasha Mills graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.
She is the daughter of Teresa Alicea and stepdaughter of Oscar Collazo of Lorain. She is the daughter and stepdaughter of Nathaniel and Tina Bonilla, also of Lorain. Mills graduated in 2006 from Remington College in North Olmsted.
Historical play
The courage and defiance of Lorain County conductors on the Underground Railroad are celebrated in a new play.
“Freedom`s Light: A Stop Along the Underground Railroad” is set in 1858 and 1859 and is the first play written by Kelly Boyer Sagert of Lorain.
Performances are scheduled Thursdays through Sundays through May 17 at the French Creek Nature Center, 4530 Colorado Ave., Sheffield.
