Lorain County Speedway: White takes modified 30-lapper
SOUTH AMHERST – - When the likes of Jeff Fade Jr. and Steven Klinect are in your rearview mirror, it could make for some uneasy moments behind the wheel of a modified car at Lorain County Speedway. However, John White did not mind the view. In fact, he embraced the challenge.
White started the 30-lap modified feature in first place and led from the green to the checkered flag .
White`s familiarity with the track was key to the win.
“We had a good set-up and good horsepower,” White said as he stood next to the winning car and trophy. “I`ve raced here for 20 years.”
Once he exited the track after the heat race, White made a spring adjustment which made all the difference in the end.
“We changed the right rear spring and made it a little stronger,” White said. “The car was getting loose exiting, and I had to nail it down to keep the left front tire down. You could see how fast it was. This car is nine years old and it`s called ‘The Rocket.’”
Matt Marlowe was top qualifier, but started near the back of the field. He was never able to work his way toward the front. Modified points leader Tigh Shaffer finished just outside the top five after switching his No. 40 car to its 2008 setup.
The caution flag usually helps to bunch the field, but only two were thrown in the race. The first came on lap nine and the second at lap 26 when Mike Lawson was spun.
Chuck Phillips and Joe Coursen were charging their way through the field in the limited late model feature, but ran into trouble with four laps to go. Coursen got loose coming off Turn 2 and bumped Phillips.
The two continued to trade paint down the backstretch before Coursen, a two-time feature winner, was sent to the infield and forced to restart at the rear of the field along with Phillips.
Brian McCall claimed the victory, while Phillips finished fourth. Coursen, the limited late model points leader coming into the feature, placed third.
LaGrange`s Jessie Houghton outran Elyrian John Konzelman in the Charger 15-lap feature.
