Area car dealerships are learning their fate as Chrysler indicated which of its nearly 800 locations will close their doors in the wake of a merger with Italy`s Fiat.
Local dealerships that Chrysler has indicated should close in bankruptcy paperwork locally include Spitzer Autoworld Sheffield in Sheffield, where officials said they were going strong.
Sliman`s Chrysler Dodge Plymouth in Amherst is among the dealers that will be spared.
“With the sales and customer service background we have, things have worked very favorably for us,” Sales Manager Tim Dalzell said. “We`re in business to stay. We made the grade.”
Meanwhile, the Chrysler wave is only the first. The ax is slated to fall Friday for some 1,000 General Motors dealerships nationwide. The GM move stems from an industry-wide shakeup that has seen car sales plummet and most of the country`s major carmakers facing government-imposed restructuring to avoid going out of business.
